Born as MM-2 in the early 1900s, 12 of these articulated Mallets were upgraded with superheaters and Worthington feed water heaters and a 4 wheel pilot truck in1936. These 4-6-6-2s were reclassified as AM-2s, they were then converted from compound to simple mallets, by replacing the rear cylinders with smaller ones, and packing the forward cylinders to have the same internal chamber size.
